Sometimes in the middle of the year, we need to begin again.” — Unknown

As we reach the halfway mark of the year (wow already!), June offers a natural pause; a  moment to breathe, take stock, and gently ask ourselves: How am I doing, really?

Too often, our resolutions and intentions fade by spring, swept away in the hustle of daily life. But a mid-year check-in isn’t about performance reviews or pressure to do more. It’s about meeting yourself with honesty, curiosity, and compassion – the same qualities at the heart of psychotherapy.

In this month’s blog post, we’ll explore five powerful mid-year reflection questions you can ask yourself and how therapy can support you in navigating the answers.

1. What has been working well for me this year?
This question sets a strengths-based tone. Instead of jumping into “what needs fixing,” take time to name what’s been going right. What routines have helped your mental health? What relationships have nourished you? What habits have created ease or stability?
In therapy, this becomes a space to recognize and reinforce your strengths. Often, we move past our progress without pause. A therapist can help you celebrate growth — however small — and build on it, guiding you to make your strengths more intentional and sustainable for the rest of the year.

Therapy prompt: “Let’s reflect on a time in the last six months when you felt most like yourself. What were you doing? Who were you with? How did it feel in your body?”

2. What have I outgrown, and what am I holding onto out of habit?
As we grow, some parts of our lives no longer align with who we are becoming. Whether it’s people-pleasing patterns, draining commitments, or outdated beliefs, June is a perfect time to gently take inventory.
What are you still saying “yes” to that feels like a “no”? What habits were once helpful but are now holding you back?

In therapy, you can explore these questions safely, without judgment. A therapist offers support as you disentangle from old stories and clarify your boundaries. Shedding what no longer serves you is a powerful act of self-care and reverence, and psychotherapy can help make that process less overwhelming.

Therapy prompt: “What have I continued to tolerate that no longer feels aligned with who I am today?”

3. Where am I experiencing resistance?
Resistance is often a messenger. Maybe you’ve been avoiding a conversation, procrastinating on a goal, or sidestepping a feeling. Instead of labeling this as laziness or failure, try to get curious: What is your resistance protecting you from?
Therapy helps uncover the deeper layers behind resistance. Rather than pushing through it, therapy gives space for you to understand its roots – fear, perfectionism, past trauma – and helps you move through it with self-compassion.

Therapy prompt: “What parts of me feel afraid to move forward? How can I listen to them with care and compassion rather than shame?”

4. What do I want the second half of this year to feel like?
Not what do I want to accomplish, but how do I want to feel? Energized? Grounded? Connected? Inspired?
Too often, we chase goals without connecting to their emotional core. Choosing a guiding feeling gives your intentions clarity and purpose — and helps shape the habits, environments, and relationships that support that feeling.

In therapy, this question becomes a foundation for visioning. A therapist can help you define what matters most, identify barriers, and develop supportive practices to move toward your ideal emotional state.

Therapy prompt: “What values do I want to embody more fully in the next six months?”

5. What kind of support do I need moving forward?
You don’t have to figure it all out alone. In fact, recognizing the need for support is a sign of strength. Whether it’s emotional support, rest, accountability, connection, or guidance, asking for what you need is deeply healing.

Psychotherapy itself is a powerful form of support; a relationship grounded in trust, insight, and growth. Working with a therapist gives you space to explore your goals, your pain, and your potential, judgement-free and all at your own pace.

Therapy prompt: “If I gave myself full permission to ask for what I need, what would I say?”

Mid-Year Reflection Through the Lens of Therapy
Therapy isn’t just a place to process the hard things, it’s also where we dream, reflect, recalibrate, and return to ourselves. A mid-year check-in, supported by therapy, invites you to:
– Reconnect with your purpose
– Shift from self-criticism to self-awareness
– Uncover inner wisdom you didn’t realize you had
– Build emotional resilience for the months ahead

You don’t have to wait for a crisis to start therapy. The middle of the year is a beautiful time to begin or to re-engage with your goals in a deeper, more intentional way.
