“And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been.” – Rainer Maria Rilke
A Gentle Start to the New Year
The beginning of a new year often comes with a surge of energy to set goals, dream big, and make changes. While this enthusiasm can be (and is!) inspiring, it’s also important to approach the new year with kindness and gentleness toward yourself. You don’t need to do everything all at once, and you certainly don’t need to have it all figured out by the end of this month. Besides, that wouldn’t leave anything to look forward to for the rest of the year!
Instead of placing pressure on yourself to accomplish everything, all at once, we encourage you to use January to reflect on what truly matters to you.
The Power of Writing Down Your Goals
One of the most powerful activities you can do to set your intentions for the year is to write down your goals. Research has shown that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to take steps towards them, and even achieve them, compared to those who only think about them.
Here’s an activity to help you organize your thoughts and dreams for 2025 (make sure to grab a pen and journal):
Divide Your Goals into Categories:
1. Personal growth (mental health, hobbies, self-love)
2. Relationships (friends, family, romantic)
3. Career and professional aspirations
4. Health and well-being (physical fitness, mindfulness, nourishment)
5. Fun and joy (travel, creative projects, bucket list items)
Start Big, Then Get Specific:
Write down your larger aspirations first, then break them into smaller, actionable steps. For example:
Big goal: “Improve my mental health.”
Smaller steps: Book a therapy session, set aside 15 minutes daily for meditation/walk in nature, journal once a week, consume positive information/news

Reflect and Prioritize:
Look over your goals list and ask yourself which ones resonate most with your authentic self and values. Remember, you don’t have to work on everything at once. Choose a few to focus on in the first quarter of the year.
Create an Affirmation or Mantra for 2025:
Write a phrase that inspires and motivates you. Something you can refer to every day when you wake up and when you go to sleep to keep you steady on your journey. Here are some examples to get you started:
“I am capable of creating a life I love, one step at a time.”
“I am rooted in self-love and open to endless possibilities.”
“I honour my journey, my pace and my unique path forward.”
“Each day I align my actions with my heart’s true desires.”
Investing in Your Well-Being with Therapy
As you embark on this journey of growth and intention-setting, consider the profound benefits of psychotherapy and music therapy. Therapy isn’t just for those navigating difficult times—it’s a valuable tool for anyone seeking to:
Self-regulate – learning to manage stress, anxiety, and emotions in a healthy way.
Heal – addressing past wounds and moving forward with resilience.
Improve mental health – gaining clarity, perspective, and emotional balance.
Foster self-love cultivating a compassionate relationship with yourself.
Strengthen interpersonal relationships – building deeper, more meaningful connections with those around you.
At Shine Music and Therapy Services, we offer a supportive, judgement-free and safe space to explore your goals, navigate challenges, and celebrate your unique journey. Whether through psychotherapy, music therapy, or a combination of both, we are here to help you reconnect with you and thrive.
A Compassionate Approach to the New Year
Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. While it’s wonderful to have goals and aspirations, it’s equally vital to honour your pace and give yourself permission to rest, reflect, and recalibrate when things feel sticky. You are worthy of rest when you need it. We do not recommend going into burnout trying to achieve your goals, because even if you do, the results will feel heavy and not as exciting.
Here are some gentle ways to ease into the new year:
Celebrate your small wins – we know, we know. We always talk about this, but it’s because it is so important! Acknowledge the progress you’ve already made, no matter how small. Revisiting our blog post on Celebrating Small Wins can help you embrace these moments of growth.
Prioritize self-care that goes beyond setting aside time to get your hair done or buying yourself the new outfit you’ve been eyeing. Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, whether it’s journaling, meditation, or spending time in nature.
Practice unwavering self-compassion. Speak to yourself with the most amount of kindness and encouragement; the same way you would a friend or family member you love.
Seek support when needed. There’s no shame in asking for help. Whether from a trusted friend, family member, or therapist, support can make a world of difference.

Shining Together in 2025
As you step into this new year and chapter of your life, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Shine Music and Therapy, we are honoured to be part of your journey. Whether you’re seeking to heal, grow, or simply find more joy in life, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Let’s make 2025 a year of purpose, creativity, and inspiration—together.
